Pakistan produces 85% of the world's Himalayan pink salt — and most of it leaves through Karachi port. If you're a distributor, retailer or brand considering importing, here's the practical playbook.
Step 1: Know what you need
Decide your product mix first: bulk edible salt (by the ton), value-added products (lamps, bath salt, grinders), or private-label finished goods. Each has different MOQs and margins.
Step 2: Understand pricing (FOB Karachi)
- Edible fine salt: $99–$199/ton depending on grade and volume
- Dark pink premium grades: $380–$490/ton
- Salt lamps (2–3kg): $13.50–$15/piece
- Private label: from 5,000 units
Best pricing kicks in at 20+ tons or full container loads. Always get quotes FOB (Free on Board) so you can compare freight options yourself.
Step 3: Always approve samples first
Reputable exporters ship DHL samples in 5–7 days. Check colour consistency, grain size, and packaging quality. The approved sample becomes your production reference.
Step 4: Documents to demand
- Certificate of Origin
- SGS or independent lab report (purity + minerals)
- Commercial invoice, packing list, Bill of Lading
- Halal certificate (for Middle East markets)
- Phytosanitary certificate where required
Red flags
- Supplier can't provide a mining licence or export registration
- No lab reports — only marketing claims
- Demands 100% advance on first order (standard is 30% advance, 70% against documents)
- Prices far below market — usually means blended or low-grade salt
Typical timeline
Samples: 1 week. Production: 15–25 days. Sea freight to US East Coast: 25–30 days; to Europe: 20–25 days; to Gulf: 7–10 days.
